(SSL)?
1.1. What is a
domain name and why should I register one?
A domain name tells people (and the computers they use)
how to find your website or homepage on the Internet. Each
domain name is assigned to a numerical IP (Internet Protocol)
address by your host provider. Internet domain names provide
a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses which are
translated by DNS (Domain Name Servers) into numeric IP.
An Internet domain name is unique and allows you to have
an "identity" on the Internet. Domain names are typically
allocated by the domain registrars on a "first come, first
served" basis - currently in excess of 200,000 domain names
are being registered per month!
You should register your domain name NOW as in the near
future most of the memorable domain names will have been
taken and only obscure domain names will remain.
Registering a domain name for your business or organization
is essential to your marketing efforts. It adds value to
your Internet presence and gives your business a unique
identity on the World-Wide Web and is therefore of great
value to your organization. Remember domain names are not
just for businesses or organizations - many people register
names for their own personal use.
Your registered domain name could be:
Web site address: http://www.your-domain-name.com
Email addresses: name@your-domain-name.com

1.2. What details
do I need to register a domain?
You are required to provide the name, address and contact
details of the person or company the domain name is to be
registered to.
Name, address and contact details are also required for
billing details. You may pay by credit card (Visa and MasterCard
only), or cheque. Credit Card registrations are preferred
and occur in realtime. Cheque registrations will only be
processed upon receiving the payment. The ownership details
of the domain are registered as public information. FastWebServer
does not keep credit card or payment information on file
for domain name transactions. Your personal profile information
with us also remains strictly confidential.

1.3. How will I
be able to tell if my desired domain name is available?
When you attempt to register a new domain name, the first
step determines whether that domain is available to register
or transfer. Simply visit our Domain
Registration page and enter the domain name
in the Lookup box. In seconds you will see the results of
your lookup. If the domain is available for registration,
then you can continue with the rest of the process. If the
domain is taken you have the choice of attempting to transfer
the domain name to FastWebServer (requires a confirmation
from the current owner of the domain), or you can go back
and try a different name. Try as many combinations as you
wish, there is no obligation to register.

You want to be visible and easy to reach. Your domain
name is the universal locator for information about your
company. Nearly every company has a website now, and the

1.5. What if my
desired name is the same as a trademarked name?
Generally, if you've registered the name in
good faith, it's not a name belonging to an internationally
known company, and you can show that you have a legitimate
reason to use that name, then you are likely to be able to
keep it. That may not be the case if it can be shown that
you purchased the name for the express purpose of re-selling
it to a company with a legitimate claim to the name. Please
see the Uniform
Dispute Resolution Policy for details.

1.6. Once a name
is registered, who "owns" the domain name?
The domain name "registrant" is the person
or organization listed at the top of the WHOIS database record.
To lookup the owner of a domain name click
here. The "registrant" is the individual or organization
that registers a specific domain name.
This individual or organization holds the right to use the
domain name for a specified period of time, provided certain
conditions are met and the registration fees are paid.
This person or organization is the "legal entity" bound by
the Terms and Conditions and Domain Name Registration Agreements.
The administrative, technical and billing contacts are individuals
who the organization trusts to handle issues involving the
domain name record.

1.7. How do I choose
a good domain name? What should I do if my first choice is
already taken?
Choose a name that reflects the intent and purpose of your
web site or business. Try to keep it short and snappy. Practice
saying it out loud, as if you were telling someone at a
party to visit your web page, to see how it sounds. Some
domain names look good on paper, but are confusing when
you try to send someone to them over the phone. When an
internet user is faced with a large number of choices, often
the catchiest domain name will grab their attention.
Don't get too upset if your first choice is already taken.
There are millions of registered domain names on the internet,
so finding a good one may take some creativity. A good suggestion
is to try a variation, abreviation, or alternative name.
For example, if your company name is John smith engineering
but johnsmithengineering.com has already been registered,
try some of the following variations:
- jsmithengineering.com
- jsenginnering.com
- john-smithengineering.com
- j-smithengineering.com
- jse.com
Or you may add a relevant word or number such as a 4, the
word online, web or even your city:
- 4johnsmithengineering.com
- johnsmithengineering-online.com
- johnsmithengineering-onweb.com
- johnsmithengineering-york.com

1.8. What characters
can be used to form a domain name and how long can it be?
The only valid characters for a domain name
are letters, numbers and a hyphen "-". Other special characters
like the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!" are NOT
permitted.
Example:
your name.com (not correct, No spaces allowed)
your-name.com (correct, all one word
with a hyphen)
A domain name can be up to 67 characters long -- including
the 4 characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.NET,
.COM, or .ORG). The www. is assumed, so you don't need
to enter it when registering.

1.15. How can
I move my domain from another registrar to yours?
Select the Transfer
Domain option. Transferring the Registrar of
your domain to FastWebServer extends the registration period
by one year. Please note it takes 5 to 7 business days to
complete the transfer process. Your domain must be in good
standing with its current registrar. Your current domain registrar
may decline the transfer request if the domain has been recently
( less than 60 days) registered with them.

2.1. After I have
placed an order, can I cancel a domain name?
No. Once you have submitted your domain name
for registration it cannot be cancelled. FastWebServer registers
the domain for the entire period immediately, and there is
no way to refund the registration fees.

2.2. I have an
e-mail which says that my domain has been registered, but
I can't get to my web site with my domain? Why?
When you receive the e-mail confirming the
registration of your new domain, there are many more steps
still to be done behind the scenes. Your domain will be entered
into the WHOIS database, and your registration must travel
to all ISPs around the world. It can take 24 to 48 hours after
you receive the confirmation e-mail before you will be able
to go to your domain with your web browser. Of course, in
order for your domain name to resolve to a website, you must
also have it Hosted. FastWebServer provides professional web
hosting solutions to all of our clients. Check out the Web
Hosting Section for more details.

2.3. How can I
make modifications, change the name servers or switch ISPs
for my domain?
When you register a domain name you select
a user name and a password and create a profile. By default
our nameservers host your domain name but immediately after
registration you can access to online domain
administration site to make modifications to
your domain including the name servers. When you switch ISPs
the new ISP gives you the name of domain name servers that
you must enter to change your ISP.

2.4. What do
I do if I Forgot My Password?
If you would like to login to renew or manage
your domain name, but you have forgotten your username and
password, you can have our system email them to you. Just
click the Forgot
Password option, and enter your domain name.
Your username and password will be emailed to the Administrative
Contact email address.
If your Administrative
Contact email address is no longer valid, then you must send
a faxed request for a "Manual Change of Administrative
Contact Information". This fax should appear on the Registrant
company's letterhead, and be accompanied by a photocopy of
the Administrative Contact's Official Photo ID. This fax must
be sent to: +1.416-385-7765. Please allow
up to 7 business days for this manual process to complete.
Once the change has been completed successfully, we will send
the username and password information to the new administrative
contact email address.

3.1. Where can
I check if my domain is registered ?
The right place to look is the Whois
(complete listing, updated twice a day). The
information listed here is all public information about the
requested domain name.

Topic
3.2. What does
it mean to "park" or "point" a domain name?
In order for your domain name to resolve to
a website, you need a Domain Name System (DNS) server to host
it. When you register a domain name with us, we are hosting
your domain name on our DNS. One of the free domain registration
services that we offer is called Domain
Forwarding. With this service, you can register
your domain name, and point it to an existing website at a
different address.
If you plan to host your website with a company other than
FastWebServer, you can move your domain name off of our servers
to another Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Host provider
at any time at no extra charge. To do so, simply login to
the Manage
Your Domain section, and change the Domain Name
Server entries for your domain.

3.3. What is Web
hosting?
Web hosting is providing space on a server
connected to the Internet for you so that you can use your
registered domain name to identify your website. You do not
have to sign up for our web hosting package in order to register
a domain name. However, if you plan to setup hosting for your
domain name, it makes sense to use the same company that you
registered it with. This way you only have to deal with one
company for all of your website related needs.
FastWebServer provides professional-grade, fast, reliable,
and affordable web hosting to our clients. Our servers are
state-of the art, secure, and guaranteed
to be up and running. Check out our Hosting
Comparison Chart, or the Web
Hosting section for more information.

3.4. What is encryption
(SSL)?
SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer encryption.
It is the standard method of encryption used on the internet
for online transactions and collection of any other sensitive
data. Modern SSL uses 128-bit encryption - a code which would
take the fastest super computer millennia to crack.
If you intend to collect Credit Card information
on your website, then you REQUIRE an SSL certificate to make
sure that this data is secured from interception or eavsdropping
by third party onlookers. Our Linux Hosting Plans include
a shared secure SSL certificate. If you would like to purchase
your own Secure Certificate for your domain, you can through
FastWebServer. Check out our E-Commerce
Section for more information on secure transactions,
or contact us
to purchase your own Secure Certificate.
