In This Chapter:
Mime Types represent file types as presented to your web
browser. The MIME Types option in your Control Panel allows
you to specify which programs are to be used for opening specific
file types (extensions).
Regardless of the mime types you set up to be opened by
your web browser, your browser can only open files of types
that it supports, either in the program itself or through
the use of plug-ins or other helper applications.
If you have MS FrontPage Extensions enabled for your site,
then this MIME Types option will not work. You must use your
version of FrontPage to handle the MIME Type specifications
for your site. If FrontPage Extensions are enabled, accessing
the MIME Types Option on your control panel will display a
message telling you that this option is not available.
Adding and Changing
MIME Types
From your "MIME Types Manager" page, select the
directory that the MIME Type specifications will apply to
from the "Directory" drop-down box. Click on the
"Load" button. The MIME Type Manager screen will
reappear with additional instructions.

To view a list and description of the available
MIME Types, click on the "here"
link near the middle of the page.
From the MIME Types Manager screen, enter the
type and the file extension that you would like to apply it
to. When entered, click on the "Add" button. The
Mime Type Manager reappears with the newly added mime type
listed in the "List of Mime Types section".
To change the file extension for an existing
mime type, you must first use the Delete link located next
to that mime type in the "List of Mime Types" section.
Then enter the mime type and the new file extension for that
type in the appropriate fields. Click on the "Add"
button to continue.
