  Chapter 23: Archive Manager

In This Chapter:

This option in your control panel allows you to backup files and directories on your site by compressing them. Compressing these files allows you to reduce the amount of storage space taken up by your backups.

NOTE: Once a file has been compressed, it can no longer be opened by your control panel's File Manager option. It can, however, still be renamed and deleted from there.

Compressing

In the Archive Manager section of your control panel, you will be shown a directory tree of the files and directories of your site. Clicking on the name of a directory will open that directory and display its contents. To Compress a file or directory, ensure that the check box next to its name is checked and click the "Compress" button. The Archive Manager page will reappear displaying the file or directory you selected near the bottom of the screen. Choose either the Unix (tar) or Windows (WinZip) method of compression and enter a name for the compressed file you want to create in the "Output File Name" field. Do not type the file extension as part of this file name. Then click the "Submit" button.

The Archive Manager will reapper, and a message will be displayed indicating that the compression is in progress. When the manager displays the "Compress Done!" message, you have successfully compressed the files or directories.

Extracting

Extracting compressed files works in much the same way as compressing them. Simply navigate through your files and directories in the Archive Manager as described above. Select the compressed files or directories you would like to extract by clicking the checkbox next to their names. When you have selected the files you would like extracted, click the "Extract" button located at the bottom of the screen.

In the Output Directory field, type the name of the directory into which you would like to extract the compressed file. To extract to the current directory, type “./” (without the quotes).

Clicking on the submit button will cause the Archive Manager to reappear. A message will be displayed indicating that the extraction is in progress. When an "Extraction Successful" message is displayed, then all files and directories have been successfully extracted.
