  Chapter 21: Search Engine

In This Chapter:

The Search Engine Options allows you to install the WebGlimpse Search Engine on your site. This tool allows users to perform searches for content on your site.

Once the search engine is installed, configured and indexed, it will be available on an HTML page located on your site. You will need to manually (using your web site creation tool of choice) create links to the WebGlimpse HTML page.

Installing the Search Engine

When you first select the Search Engine option from your control panel, a page will be displayed allowing you to install the Webglimpse search engine on your site. To do so, simply click on the "Install Webglimpse" button. A message will then appear indicating that WebGlimpse will be installed on your account within 10 minutes.

Configuring the Search Engine for Your Site

Once the Webglimpse Search Engine has been installed on your site, clicking on the Search Engine control panel option will bring you to the "Search Engine Manager" page. The Search Engine Manager allows you to pick the types of files that you would like indexed on your site.

From the Search Engine Manager, click the "Directory Administration" button. Instructions for changing the searchable directories on your site will be displayed.

To eliminate specific types of files from being accessed by the search engine, include the following line in the "Edit the file here:" text box: Deny \.extension where ".extension" is the extension of the file type you would like to eliminate.

To eliminate specific directories from being accessed, include the following line in the "Edit the file here:" text box: Deny /directoryname where "directoryname" is the name of the directory you would like to eliminate.

When all of your desired changes have been made, click the "Save" button.

Re-Indexing Your Site with the Search Engine

Installing WebGlimpse automatically creates an index of your site. If you make any changes to your site such as adding new pages, changing content on existing pages, or eliminating files and directories, then you will need to re-index your site with the search engine.

To do this, click the "ReIndex Web Pages" button on your Search Engine Manager page. This will automatically re-index the web pages on your site, and display a page of the results from this re-indexing.

Testing the Search Engine

Once the Search Engine has been installed and configured on your site, you may wish to test it to make sure it is functioning correctly.

From your Search Engine Manager, select the link found beneath the heading "Test using your new search engine". A new page will appear featuring the WebGlimpse search engine tool for your site.

Try testing the utility by entering a search string for a piece of text you know to be in a file on your site. Click on the "Submit" button. A results page will appear. You can try changing the various settings available in the WebGlimpse tool, then performing other searches to verify how those settings affect the search.

Removing the Search Engine

When you enter the Search Engine option from your control panel, if WebGlimpse is currently installed, you will see the Search Engine Manager page. To remove the search engine from your site, simply click on the first option available "Remove WebGlimpse". A message will appear indicating that webglimpse will be removed from your site within ten minutes.
