Using the Protect Directories option, you can limit the amount
of access that users have to your site. With this option, you
can specify a username and password for any directory in "www".
Each protected directory may have multiple users (each with a
different password if you prefer) with access to it. Additionally,
the Protect Directories option can be used to remove a user’s
access to a specific protected directory.
Conflict with
FrontPage Extensions
In order to use the Protect Directories option, the Microsoft
FrontPage Extensions option must be disabled. If it is enabled,
then you must use your version of Microsoft FrontPage to perform
directory protection. If Microsoft FrontPage Extensions are enabled,
you will not have access to the Protect Directories option of
your control panel. If you attempt to access this option, you
will see the following message:

How
to Protect a Directory
To protect a specific directory, first select its
name from the "Directory" drop-down menu on the Directory
Protection Manager page and click "Load".

If you have not already added protection to this
directory, the option to "Add/Modify" a user for the
directory will appear. (if you have already added protection to
this directory then there will be an additional option to "Remove
a user" for the directory)

To add protection to the directory, or create an
additional user for it, enter a "User ID" and "Password".
If you would like to change the password for a particular
user, simply enter the user's "User ID" and the
new password. When a directory is given at least one username
and password combination, that directory becomes protected
and may only be accessed by the users specified by you.

How
to Remove a User's Access to a Directory
If you have already added password protection to
a directory, then an option to "Remove a user" will
appear in addition to the "Add/Modify" option when you
load that directory.

Once a user name and password combination has been
created for a directory, that combination can be removed at any
time. To do so, first ensure that the correct directory has been
loaded from the "Directory" drop-down box at the top.
Then select the username that you would like to remove from the
drop-down box at the bottom of the screen titled "Remove
a user for directory:". When you click the "Remove"
button, that user will no longer have password access to the directory.
To verify this, wait for the screen to refresh,
and then check the "Remove a user for directory" drop-down
box again. The removed username should no longer appear in this
box.

Removing
All Protection from a Directory
To remove all protection from a specific directory,
use the same procedure as outlined above (in the section entitled
“Removing a User’s Access to a Protected Directory”)
to remove every user name in the user list. Once all user names
have been removed, the protection on the directory is removed
as well.
