The File Manager option of your control panel
can prove to be one of the most powerful, and well-used features
available. The File Manager handles many of the functions that
an FTP or Telnet Client would handle, and it accomplishes this
all within your browser. From your File Manager you can set
permissions of files and directories, create and edit HTML files,
create new directories, upload files from your computer, and
sort the contents of your online directories. The following
figure shows you screen shots of the different areas of your
file manager.

The permissions for each file and directory are
divided into three groups of three permissions. The first group
of permissions is the "Owner" group, the second are
those of any other "Group" that you may have created,
and the third set of permissions pertain to anyone else or "Others".
r (read
access) - user has the ability to access the file for
viewing
w (write
access) - user has the ability to overwrite existing
files or create new files in the specified directory
x (executable
access) - user can run executable files
- (no access)
- user is given no permission at all
At the bottom of each directory, you will find
the following options. These options perform their function
on the currently open directory (for example "Sort"
will sort the directory that is currently open).

The "Sort" feature allows you to sort
the files in the currently open directory by either Name, Size,
or Time.
The "Create/Edit file" feature allows
you to create a new HTML file in this directory or edit
an existing one. Simply enter the name of the file that
you would like to create or edit.
The "Create Directory" function creates
a new subdirectory within the currently open directory.
The "Upload" function allows you to
browse your local computer for files and upload them to the
open directory.
When you are within a subdirectory, clicking on
the "Parent Directory" link above the directory list
will take you to the directory above the one you are currently
in.
To delete a file or directory, click on the [delete]
link found directly to the right of it. Likewise, to rename
a file or directory, click on the [rename]
link directly to the right of it.
You can also access the Directory Protection Manager
from your File Manager screen. This tool is accessed by clicking
on the [password]
link found next to any protected files or directories. For an
in-depth description on how to use the Directory Protection
Manager, consult Chapter
18.
